Foundation: P3 - Particle model of matter Flashcards
Describe the particle arrangement of a solid.
Regular structure. Particles are vibrating in fixed positions.
Describe the particle arrangement of a liquid.
Irregular structure. Particles are able to flow because of the gaps between particles.
Describe the particle arrangement of a gas.
Large gaps between particles. Particles are quickly moving in random directions.
Name the state changes.
Freezing, melting, evaporating (boiling), condensing, sublimating
State the equation for density.
Density = Mass ÷ Volume
State the unit of mass
Mass is measured in kilograms, kg
State the unit of volume
Volume is measured in metres cubed, m³
State the unit of density
Density is measured in kilograms per metres cubed, kg/m³
Define mass
Mass: mass is the amount of substance that something contains
Define volume
Volume: volume is the amount of 3D space that something takes up
Define density
Density: density is the mass per volume of an object
Define specific latent heat
Specific latent heat: specific latent heat is the amount of energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a substance with no change in temperature
Define specific heat capacity
Specific heat capacity: specific heat capacity is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 ᵒC
Describe what happens to the temperature of an object when it changes state.
The temperature of an object stays the same during state change.
State how we can find the total internal energy of an object.
Total internal energy = Kinetic energy of the particles + Potential energy of the particles
