Fossils Flashcards
What is a fossil?
Preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the past. Mostly found in sedimentary rock layers. Can be as small as bacteria or as giant as a dinosaur. The study of fossils is called Paleontology.
What is the condition for forming fossils?
Quick Burial of an organism. Layers of sediments build up over the organism and left for a long period of time. Also, erosion and uplifting exposes them to the Earth’s surface.
Which layer do you think contains the oldest fossils? The deepest layer or the on closest to the top?
The deepest layer.
What is the Law of Superposition?
The Law of Superposition is when geologists assume the newest rock layers are on top of the older ones, unless some type of disturbance occurs. This law helps scientists to determine the age of fossils and allow them to state that one fossil is older than another because of the strata in which it is found.
;’What is a fossil record?
A fossil record is a history of life as documented by fossils, which tells us when the organisms lived and how they changed over lots of years.
What are the 8 types of Fossilization?
- Petrification
- Replacement
- Permineralization
- Molds and Casts
- Carbonization
- Fossil Resin (amber)
- Tar and Ice
- Trace Fossils
What are the 2 types of Petrification?
Replacement and Permineralization
What is the replacement in Petrification?
Replacement is the process of when water dissolves the original solid material and replaces it with minerals.
What is Per mineralization?
Per mineralization is when groundwater carries dissolved minerals into the pores and cavities of bone, wood, or shells and the original material is preserved .
What are mold and casts?
Mold is when an organism dies and there is no filling. Casts is when an organism dies and it’s filled with filling such as minerals
What is Carbonization?
Carbonization is the process by which all substances of plants and animals decay, and leave all the carbon.
What is Fossil Resin?
Resin is excreted from certain plants, which is thought to protect them from insects and seals off plant injuries.
What is tar and ice?
An animal can be trapped in tar and the whole body can be preserved. and ice, is when animals get freezed in ice.
What are trace fossils?
Trace fossils are evidence of life in the past from the body of the animal itself.
What are some examples of Trace Fossils?
Footprints
Tracks
Burrows
Feces
Borings
