Fossil Power Flashcards
Name four fossil fuels
Peat
Coal
Oil
Natural gas
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance that is burned to release energy
What is the definition of finite
An limited source of a product
What is combustion
rapid chemical combination of a substance with oxygen, involving the production of heat and light.
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen >
Carbon dioxide + water
Describe carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is an poisonous, colourless gas which stops blood from carrying oxygen
What dose the universal indicator do when an acid has formed
It changes to a pinky organ he colour
What dose burning a fossil fuels produce
It produces acids gasses, carbon dioxide, sulphate dioxide and other oxides of nitrogen
What are the affects of acid rain
Causes serious harm to plants and animals
The damage is leaves, we can use photosynthesis
PH of rivers, increase killing fish
Causes damage to metal structures and other building stonework
What is the pH rainwater?
The pH of 5 to 6
Why is normal rainwater slightly acidic
rainwater is natural acidic due to natural occurring carbon dioxide being dissolved and rainwater. These gases are produced by burning fossil fuels lower than the pH of rainwater.
What is biomass
Biomass is a material obtained from a living thing that can be burned to produce energy
Is biomass renewable source of energy
Yes, because it can be made from renewable source of energy
How is an ethanol made
Ethanol made by from a process that from using yeast to convert sugars then to ethanol
Is bio ethanol cheap to produce
Yes because it is made from a waste product
What are the advantages of bio ethonal
Advantage of bioethanol is that crops grown from bio ethanol take away carbon dioxide from the atmosphere making it good for the atmosphere
It’s is also cheep to produce and is not a finite source
What is combustion
Combustion as a substance reacts with oxygen released energy
What is an exothermic reaction
Exothermic reactions release heat
What re the stages of exothermic reactions
moving from gas to liquid to solid
How is coal formed
Coal is formed when dead plant matter crushed in swamp environments and is subjected to heat and pressure over hundreds of millions of years
How is oil formed
Oil is formed from the fossilised remains of small marine life, such as plankton, that died and fell to the bottom of the sea. Their remains were then covered by mud and dirt which began to turn to rock as heat and pressure increased over time
How is natural gas formed
formed from the remains of ancient animals and plants that were buried & compressed for millions of years
How is Piet formed
Peat is a type of soil made of dead plants that have not completely rotted
What happens in incomplete combustion
Carbon (soot) and carbon monoxide are produce
How do we get oil out of the ground
Fracking
What is incomplete combustion
An limited supply of oxygen hydrocarbons burn incompleatly leaving soot
