Fossil Fuels & Biomass Flashcards
What are the three types of fossil fuels?
Coal, Natural gasses and Oil
How is oil formed?
Oil is formed when in the North Sea when it was shallower, there were many animals and plant that eventually died, these millions of dead things built up and then the sand and mud trapped them in to make sandstone and mudstone. Pressure, and heat changed the organisms to oil and gas.
Why is fossil fuels called fossil fuels?
They are called fossil fuels as it was made from living things which lived on the earth a long time ago.
How power stations work?
They work, as heat from the fuels boiling water will then make steam, which the floats up and makes pressure. A shaft connect me the turbine to a generator. The pressure turned the blades of the turbine. A power station is 35% efficiency. Efficiency can be improved by using less energy for the cooling system.
Is fossil fuels renewable?
Fossil fuels are not renewable and can run out as soon as 50 years time.
Do fossil fuels effect the environment?
Fossil fuels can release carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. This then can lead to global warming.
What fuels a nuclear power station?
The fuel used to power a nuclear power station is plutonium 239 and uranium 235. These can run out, this making nuclear power non renewable.
How does nuclear power make electricity?
It splits the atoms of the uranium or plutonium in half, that then heats the water, making it then spin the turbine.
What are all ways of making electricity?
There’s solar energy Wind power Wave power Tidal energy Geothermal Hydro electricity Biomass
Are biofuels good?
Biofuels are plants and types of environmental things, like trees that are made into fuel for cars and machinery. They aren’t as bad on the environment but aren’t as good at powering/ furling things compared to fossil fuels.
