Fossil Fuels Flashcards
Where is coal found?
Swamps
What is coal made from?
Dead plants
How is coal formed?
Layers of rock and dirt compressed over time with heat, time and pressure
When was coal formed?
Millions of years ago
Where is oil found?
Ocean floor
What is oil made of?
Plankton
How is oil formed?
Layers of sediment, heat, time and pressure
When was oil formed?
Millions of years ago
Where’s gas found?
Oil deposits
What is gas made of?
Plankton and microorganisms
How is gas formed?
Even higher temperatures and amount of pressure
Why doesn’t everyone agree on how we use fossil fuels?
Environmental impacts, financial aspect, easy to use, comfortable with it, where they live, age, wealth, accessibility, climate
What are the three main greenhouse gases released through burning fossil fuels!
C02 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (Methane), H20 (water/steam)
What causes acid rain?
SO2 (sulphur dioxide) and some carbon dioxide
What particulates are released?
Carbon and other impurities
What’s the process of the gases contributing to climate change?
Fossil fuels burnt, gases released including CO2, up into atmosphere, layer thickens, gases trapped, greenhouse effect, climate change, climate/weather extremes
Fossil fuels are non renewable, define non renewable.
An energy source that cannot be replenished at the rate they are used, they will eventually run out.
What does a basic power station contain?
Boiler, turbine, cooling tower, generator. Transformer
What does the boiler do?
Heat from fuel turns water into steam
What do the turbines do?
Getting kinetic energy from energy stores of steam
What does the generator do?
Turned by turbines to produce electric current
