Fossil Fuels Flashcards
Define a hydrocarbon
A compound made up from hydrogen and carbon
What is a crude oil a mixture of
Hydrocarbon
What is fractional distillation
It’s a separation technique which separates different liquids by there boiling point
What does the term fraction mean
A mixture of different hydrocarbons with similar boiling point
If the fraction is at the top what does that mean
It has the lowest boiling point and smallest molecule
If the fraction is at the bottom what does that mean
It has the highest boiling point and biggest molecules
What the order of the fractions from bottom to top
Bitumen, fuel oil, diesel, kerosene, petrol, refinery gas
What is residue used for
To surface roads and for sealing roofs
What is fuel oil used for
Used for ship feul and power station
What is diesl used for
It’s used as fuel for cars, trains, van, lorries
What is kerosene used for
It’s fuel for jet engines
What is refinery gas used for
Cooking and heating
As you go down the fractions what happens
It becomes more darker and viscous and less flammable
What dies viscous mean
Thick not runny
