Self Schemas, Hazel Markus (1977)
A
- Participants rated themselves as either dependent or independent
- They were rated as either schematic (rated extremely in one direction) or aschematic (rated themselves in the middle)
- Later they rated how well a series of traits described them
- Schematic participants judged schema-relevant traits as true or not true of themselves much more quickly than schematic participants, suggesting that people are more attuned to information that maps onto an existing self-schema
- Schematic participants were more likely to refute feedback from a test that contradicted their self-schemas
- Shows that self schemas help us process information in the specific domain more quickly, as we retrieve relevant evidence faster
