Aphorism
A pithy observation which contains a general truth.
“the old aphorism ‘the child is father to the man’”
Here are some characteristics of aphorisms:
Concise: Aphorisms are short, terse, or laconic.
Memorable: Aphorisms are meant to be memorable.
Wise or witty: Aphorisms are often witty or wise.
Imagery and metaphor: Aphorisms often use imagery and metaphor to convey an important point.
Stand the test of time: A good aphorism is meant to remain true and elegant over time.
Some examples of aphorisms include:
“Let us value the quality of life, not the quantity”
“A poem with one line wrong is like a Rubik’s Cube with one square wrong”
Operose
Showing or displaying much industry or effort, busy, painstaking
Eudaimonia
Happiness and wellbeing of people and mankind.
A Greek word literally translating to the state or condition of good spirit, and which is commonly translated as ‘happiness’ or ‘welfare’.
Recrudescence
17th century, the return of something terrible after a time of reprieve.
Hyperbolic
Deliberately exaggerated
Multivalence
Having or susceptible of many applications, interpretations, meanings or values.
Obscurantism
The practice of deliberately preventing the facts or full details of something from becoming known.
