formula funding and league tables Flashcards
what dod gillborn and youdell argue
Gillborn and Youdell agreed with this by saying that funding formula, league tables and competition have widened social inequalities as schools are under pressure to select more able, middle class pupils, who would therefore gain the school a higher ranking in the exam league tables.
cream skimming
these are all examples of cream skimming where schools select the most high achieving students to attend their schools to improve exam results and thus improve their ranking on league tables. in turn, as a school becomes higher on the league table they’re able to select from a wider variety of pupils and thus improve results once again through cream skimming which raises the schools funding.
disadvantaged students
however disadvantaged students from poorer areas are more likely to go to lower achieving schools, achieve lower grades and As a result the school goes lower on league tables.
persistance of social class inequalities
therefore critics of marketisation policies argue that the persustance of social class inequalities prove that marketisation policies have increased social class segregation between schools
ofsted funding
however this is not always the case as schools put into special measures by ofsted tend to receive extra funding to improve the provision of education. therefore, if schools use this funding effectively they should be able to improve their ranking on league tables suggesting that some policies are effective in raising education standards.
