Mass tourism

A

-travel that involves large numbers of tourists visiting a particular place together
- often takes place in the form of a package holiday
- involves a tour usually arranged by a travel agent, includes guides, transport, accommodation and most meals
- guides speak the local language and are knowledgeable about sites, histories, cultures and habits of the places to be visited

Niche tourism

A

-refers to special interest tourism based on a particular area, interest or activity, and be done by independent travellers or combined with package tours
- appeals to traveler’s who seek new destinations, activities and experiences
- whale watching in Hawaii and white water rafting and bungee jumping in New Zealand
- ecotourism is also a form of niche tourism, refers to responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the wellbeing of locals
- involves relatively undistributed natural areas, helps tourist better appreciate natural beauty and bio diversity
- provides funds for ecological conservation and benefit local communities involved in tourism
- includes visits to national parks, natural reserves and marine parks
- such places have regulations that limit camping, walking and waste disposal
-eg the Waitomo caves in NEW ZEALAND. Conditions within the cave like carbon dioxide and the number of tourists to minimise the impact on the environment are closely monitored
