  1. Elections and Representation:
    Regular, fair and free elections to allow citizens to vote for their representatives of choice. Multiple political parties and candidates to choose from.
  2. Separation of Powers:
    Divided government branches: Executive, Legislative, Judicial. Each with distinct powers and responsibilities. Checks and balances to prevent abuse of power.
  3. Rule of Law:
    Laws apply equally to all citizens, including leaders. Independent judiciary to ensure justice and uphold laws.
  4. Civil Liberties and Rights:
    Protection of individual freedoms such as: speech, assembly, religion and press. Respect for human rights and dignity.

  1. Concentration of Power:
    Power is concentrated in the hands of an individual or small group. Little or no separation of powers.
  2. Limited Political Freedom:
    Restricted political parties, often one dominant party. Controlled or manipulated elections, if held at all.
  3. Rule by Decree:
    Ruler(s) can make decisions without the input of the public or any branch of the government. Laws can be changed or bypassed at the discretion of the ruler.
  4. Restricted Civil Liberties and Rights:
    Limited freedom of speech, assembly, religion and press. Human rights abuses may be prevalent.
