What is direct democracy?
A system used by the Swiss wherein the people are given a direct vote on decisions usually in the form of a Yes, No answer
What is Representative democracy?
The system used by the British wherein the people elect a person or group of people to make decisions on their behalf. The representative gain their legitimacy from the masses who elected them and so represent their interests.
With recent events concerning referendums what concerns does direct democracy raise.
In 2016 the small margin of 48:52 percent in terms of the historic decision to leave the European Union has brought up concerns to do with Tyranny of the majority.
Explain the concept of universal suffrage
Based upon the ideal of fairness the British system grants suffrage to all of those who are are not a prisoner, mentally disabled or a peer, has the right to vote, on the basis of one person one vote. This means that all votes are equal in value and their is no distinction based on class, race gender extr.
