What are the main 3 parts of sonata-allegro form?
Exposition, development, and recapitulation.
How many main sections does the exposition have in sonata-allegro form?
Two themes - one in I and one in V. They vary also in style. The first theme is usually declarative and the second more lyrical.
In this section of sonata-allegro form, one may hear ideas from the themes repeated in different keys and styles.
Development
What is the main difference between the exposition and the recapitulation?
The exposition modulates (usually) to the dominant key, while the recapitulation stays in the tonic and does not modulate.
What are the four forms in which the “basic set” of notes in 12-tone serialism may be expressed?
Prime, inversion, retrograde, retrograde-inversion (find the inversion and then retrograde it)
The __________ of the prime begins with the same pitch class as the prime, but consequently, all of the intervals are inverted.
Explain the process of finding an inversion.
Calculate the space between the two tones. The number that can be added to that one that comes out to be 12 is the space of the next interval in an inversion. Also, the interval must move in the opposite direction as the prime.
