Q

Decribe what happens on firing to the Cart 81mm Mortar ILLUM M9769A2 FZ MTSQ DM93

A
  • Firing pin strikes percussion cap which initiates the primary cartridge which subsequently ignites the augmenting charge via the flash holes
  • Obturating ring provides forwards obturation and the rapidly expanding gases expels the mortar from the barrel
  • Setback force unlocks the fuze’s setback safety device to commence the fuze arming sequence
  • Fuze arms after 40metres of flight time
  • Once pre-selected flight time is met, fuze initiates the expulsion charge
  • Expulsion charge causes separation of the front and rear sections of the mortar body
  • Illuminant candle and parachute deploy and simultaneously igniting the delay element on the candle
  • Drogue parachute deploys and slows assembly so that the main parachute is withdrawn from main body
  • Main parachute deploys, delay element ignites illuminant candle
  • Candle burns for 60 seconds at 500,000 candela

18
Q

What targets are the Cart 120mm M830A1 HEAT-MP-T designed to defeat?

A
  • Light Armoured Vehicles
  • Helicopters
  • Soft Targets (bunkers)
19
Q

Prior to leading, what can the fuze PIBD M774 be set to?

A
  • Ground (G) point detonating

- Air (A) proximity mode

20
Q

What happens on firing of the cart 120mm M830 HEAT-MP-T round?

A
  • Fuze set prior to loading
  • Voltage applied to electric primer (M129)
  • Ignites propellant (JA-2), tracer element and CCC
  • Gases generated propel projectile down barrel
  • Silicon seal at rear of the sabot provides obturation
  • Aerodynamic forces cause sabot and obturator to separate
  • Setback allows the release mechanism in the M774 to release rotor from first safe position
  • Voltage generators activated on setback, charging the M774 firing capacitory and M74 proximity fuze capacity
  • Deceleration on exiting the barrel allows rotor to move into the armed position aligning the explosive train
  • Target sensed by M74 fuze, firing signal sent to M774 fuze
  • M774 firing capacity provides energy to initiate M69 detonator
  • Detonator initiates fuze lead cup, booster cup, initiates warhead
  • Copper jet formed along with shrapnel and blast
21
Q

True or false, the main charge of the 120mm KE-W A2 is contained solely by the CCC?

A

False, Combustible disc and Propellant Containment bag is held inside the CCC

22
Q

Explain how the Cart 81mm MOR ILLUM 9769A2 function from “Actions on Deployment”

A
  • Once pre selected flight time is reached, the fuze functions initiating the mortar cartiridges expulsion charge
  • Expulsion charge causes separation of front and rear sections of mortar body
  • Illuminant candle and parachute assemblies deploy and simultaneously ignite the delay element of the candle
  • Drogue parachute deploys and slows the assembly so that the main parachute is deployed
  • Delay element ignites the candle
  • Candle burns for 60 seconds and generates 500000 candella
  • Main parachute imparts a descent rate of approx 5m/s
23
Q

True/false, he delay element on the Cart 81mm MOR ILLUM 9769A2 is incorporated into the closing lid of the illuminant candle and provides a 2.5 second delay prior to the ignition of the illuminant candle?

A

-

-Target Practice with Tracer (TP-T) M793; and
Dummy M794

32
Q

Describe the functioning of the Cart 25MM MP-T SD Mk 2

A
  • Firing pin strikes the primer which ignites the booster pellet and in turn the main propellant charge
  • Propellant burns and ignites the tracer element and produces pressure to force projectile down the barrel
  • Projectile functions after impact and penetration of target
  • Energy produced from striking the target will ignite the incendiary composition
  • Heat and pressure generated within the projectile will cause the HE to detonate and fragment the steel body
  • Should the projectile miss the target, the tracer will burn to the required-time, heat the thin wall between the tracer and self destruct element and detonate the HE fill.
33
Q

What colour are the markings of the MPT-SD Mk 2?

A
  • Coloured yellow, red band and lot details in red

- Nose cap anodised aluminium

34
Q

Define the workings of the Fuze MTSQ M772

A
  • Set the fuze timing mechanism using a setting spanner and remove safety pin
  • Setback forces overcome force of locking sleeve spring and release detent ball bearnings
  • Detents retract rearwards and compress detent springs
  • Detent pins stop against the base and are locked in place by the v-spring
  • Escarpment anchor is released by upper ends of detent pins
  • 1st Mechanical lock is removed on rotor
  • Firing pin is temporarily forced rearwards which prevents premature release of the rotor until projectile leaves barrel and setback is overcome
  • Escarpment anchor under spring tension rotates the mainspring causing the engagement slot to move towards the firing arm
  • After approx 1 second, clockwork timing mech runs down, the top gear turns the geared segment of the locking shaft
  • Rotor is released when grooves in the detent pins are aligned with the flange locked on the rotor and locking shaft is disengaged from the rotor. This removes the 2nd mechanical lock
  • Rotor rotates until stop pin engages detent pin
  • Detonator is aligned with firing pin
  • On set time release lever is released and firing pin drives into the detonator
  • On PD, nose crushes and drives striker into firing pin which drives pin into detonator
