Formation of the dentitions Flashcards
What is dental anatomy and physiology?
It is defined as, but is not limited to the study of the structures, morphology, and functions. As well as how the function of each tooth is related to the other teeth in the dentition.
What are the two sets of teeth in the human dentition?
Primary or deciduous dentition
Permanent or succedaneous dentition
What is the first set of teeth that will occur in the mouth?
The primary or deciduous dentition is the first set of teeth that erupt in the mouth. It begins to form prenatally at about 14 weeks in the utero and is completed postnatally at about 3 years of age.
What are the two sets of teeth humans have?
Humans have a primary (deciduous) dentition and a permanent (succedaneous) dentition.
When does the primary dentition begin to form?
The primary dentition begins to form prenatally at about 14 weeks in utero.
At what age is the primary dentition completed?
The primary dentition is completed postnatally at about 3 years of age.
At what mean age do the first teeth of the primary dentition appear?
The first teeth in the primary dentition begin to appear at a mean age of 6 months.
When do the last teeth of the primary dentition emerge?
The last teeth of the primary dentition emerge at a mean age of 28 ± 4 months.
When do the first permanent teeth begin to emerge?
The first permanent teeth begin to emerge when the child is about 6 years of age.
What is the mixed dentition period?
The mixed dentition period is when there is a mixture of deciduous and permanent teeth present.
What ages does the mixed dentition period last?
The mixed dentition period lasts from about 6 to 12 years of age.
What marks the end of the mixed dentition period?
The mixed dentition period ends when all the deciduous teeth have been shed.
What begins the permanent dentition period?
The permanent dentition period begins with the emergence of the first permanent molars and the shedding of the deciduous incisors.
What is the duration of the permanent dentition period?
The duration of the permanent dentition period is 12+ years.
At what age is the permanent dentition completed?
The permanent dentition is completed at about 14 to 15 years of age, except for the third molars.
When are the third molars completed?
The third molars are completed at 18 to 25 years of age.
How many teeth are in the completed permanent dentition?
The completed permanent dentition consists of 32 teeth if none are congenitally missing.
