Formation of Ions Flashcards
When are ions made?
Ions are made when electrons are transferred.
What happens when metals form ions?
When metals form ions they lose electrons from their outer shell to form positive ions.
What happens when non-metals form ions?
When non-metals form ions they gain electrons into their outer shell to form negative ions.
What is a positive ion called?
Positive ions are called cations.
What are negative ions called?
Negative ions are called anions.
Calculate how many electrons will be lost and gained from these groups: Group 1 Group 2 Group 6 Group 7
Group 1 elements will lose an electron with a charge of 1+
Group 2 elements will lose 2 electrons with a charge of 2+
Group 6 elements will gain an electron with a charge of 1-
Group 7 elements will gain 2 electrons with a charge of 2-
