Formation Of Glomerular Filtrate Flashcards
1
Q
What is the process called to how glomerular filtration is formed?
A
Ultrafiltration
2
Q
Describe the process of how glomerular filtrate is formed
A
- blood enters thru renal artery
- which enters lots of arterioles that all enter the bowmans capsule
- the afferent arteriole entering capsule is wider than the efferent arteriole exiting
- causing a high hydrostatic pressure in glomerulus within capsule
- therefore causing water, glucose, urea and mineral ions being forced out of the fenestrations in capillaries + podocytes
- however blood cells and plasma proteins cannot pass thru as theyre too big, so remain in capillaries
- to form glomerular filtrate
- which then moves to PCT where most of it is reabsorbed back into blood
3
Q
What can and cannot pass through fenestrations in glomerulus and why?
A
- filtrate can pass thru capillaries thru connective tissue and branches of podocytes
- however blood cells and plasma proteins cannot pass thru as theyre too big, so remain in capillaries
