Formant frequencies Flashcards
Do consonants and vowels have formant frequencies?
Yes
What are formant frequencies?
The frequencies at which local energy peaks are allowed to pass through the supralaryngeal vocal tract.
What are formant frequencies determined by?
Length and shape of supralaryngeal vocal tract.
Small vocal tract = …
Higher formant frequencies
What does F1 tell you about?
Open/closed dimension. Low F1 means the mouth is more closed.
What does F2 tell you about?
Anterior/posterior dimension. High F2 = smaller front cavity. e.g /i/ - front cavity in front of palatal constriction is SMALL so high F2.
What is a neutral vowel?
Vocal tract is open. No major constrictions so formant frequencies have an equal space between them.
