What is formal support?
formal support is provided by health professionals who are paid and have been trained
What does formal support include?
primary, secondary and tertiary care services
What is primary care services?
primary care services are usually people’s first point of contact with health professionals
What does primary care services include?
health centres (with GPs, practice nurses and midwives), pharmacies, dental surgeries and opticians (both optometrists and opticians)
What are the functions of a pharmacy?
- giving advice on medication
- offering health promotion and advice
- providing aids such as nicotine replacement therapies and blood pressure monitors
What are the functions of a dental surgery?
- providing treatment for teeth and gums
- giving advice on how to keep teeth and gums healthy
What are the functions of an opticians?
- assessing and monitoring the health of the eyes, and providing glasses
- giving advice on how to keep eyes healthy
What are the functions of a health centre?
- prescribing drugs and treatments
- working together with people to produce health improvement plans and monitoring progress
- measuring and interpreting physiological indicators, such as pulse, blood pressure, peak flow and BMI
- Advising on lifestyle health risks, such as smoking, drugs and alcohol
- Referring patients to other health professionals (secondary and tertiary care services)
What is secondary care services?
patients who require hospital care for a health condition will be referred to a secondary care service by their primary health care provider
What is tertiary care services?
tertiary care services provide specialists support in dedicated units
Examples of tertiary care services?
stroke rehabilitation, oncology and secure mental health units
Examples of secondary care specialists?
cardiologist, psychiatrist, paediatrician, respiratory specialist, neurologist
