what are formal sanctions against deviance?
Any sanction imposed by official body such as the police, courts, schools and other institutions. They are punishments for breaking formal written rules, examples of this include, courts may fine against theft and schools may exclude pupils for bullying.
what are informal sanctions against deviance?
These are sanctions that are used when rules are not formally written down, perhaps they are unspoken. when one breaks these rules, someone may show their disapproval in informal ways such as refusing to speak to them.
what are positive sanctions?
these are rewards for behaviour that someone or society approves of. examples include praise from a parent or teacher, however, just like negative sanctions they can be formal or informal.

sanctions are forms of social control, which are ways in which society seeks to control our behaviour and ensure that we conform to its norms and values.
