Function
form: the pattern of elements

Motivation
narrative function of an element in a film: narrative or stylistic devices
Motifs
ANY significant element that is REPEATED in a film narrative or stylistic device, which often have thematic significance
Variation
Consists of any significant film element that is repeated in a film but that repetition entails variations on past instances, either narrative or stylistic
Variation frequently bears narrative significance
Narrative Elements
Those elements of a film that constitute a film’s story: plot, settings, characters, the goals, and subjective states of the characters
Stylistic Elements
Elements of a film through which the story is told: mise-en-scéne, editing, music, etc.
