Form /Structure/language Flashcards
Three plots
Shakespeare purposefully switches between multiple scenarios leaving many unresolved as the story continues to control high levels of tension
Long scenes such as the courtroom scene that is never interrupted creates tension
Foreshadowing is also in the play . “Perils of water” foreshadows the believed destruction of Antonios ships
Rhyme
Shakespeare uses rhyme to emphasise the theme or message in the scene.
When Bassanio wins the casket test he starts to speak in rhyme to add a romantic tone to the scene.
Blank verse
Can be used to create fast paced tension such as the courtroom scene .
Or to establish a romantic theme for example when Lorenzo and Jessica are confessing their love
Bassanio speaks in blank verse when with Portia perhaps reflecting at the falseness of his love
In the court room scene Shylock interrupts the blank verse and begins to speak in prose. “I have them ready”
This is to highlight the dire situation that they are in
Religous imagery
Shylock”devil jew”
These descriptions emphasise how evil he is in their eyes
Portia uses a simile to stress the importance of mercy.”it droppeth like the gentle rain from heaven”
Commercial imagery
“Signed “
“Ratified”
Antithesis
“Cooled my friends , heated my enemies” highlights Shylocks anger towards Christianity
Portia also uses this as she criticises bassanio for giving up the rings “a light wife doth make a heavy husband”
Hyperbole
The courting of portia
“All the world desires her”
Repetition
“I will have my bond” repeated in act 3 sc 3 . It emphasises how much revenge drives him showing his evil nature
Portia repeats the word “choose” when she refers to the casket emphasising how her freedom is restricted
