Forestry Flashcards
What is a stand
A group of similarly-sized trees within a forest
What is clearcutting
When most to all the trees in an area are cut down
What is a Snag?
A snag is a dead or dying tree
What is silviculture
The practice of controlling the growth and composition of forests, specifically for the purposes of timber production
What is the distinction between forestry and silviculture?
Silviculture is applied at the stand-level, whereas forestry is broader
What is BLM’s phrase for “clearcutting”
Regeneration cutting or Regeneration harvesting
Difference between regeneration harvesting and commercial thinning
Regeneration harvesting wipes out entire areas, whereas commercial thinning only cuts down individual patches
What does LITA stand for
Low Intensity Timber Areas
What is SYU?
Sustained yield unit (SYU) – An administrative unit for which an allowable sale quantity is
calculated; in western Oregon, the six sustained yield units correspond to the Coos Bay, Eugene,
Medford, Roseburg, and Salem Districts, and the western portion of the Klamath Falls Field
Office.
Complex early seral forests are also called ___ forests
Snag forests. Snags are trees that are dead or dying but still standing
Why can even aged class distribution be good
Timber management in an even-aged forest is considered
to be economically efficient since major operations require
only one entry into a stand. Final harvests involve removing
nearly all trees depending upon the regeneration method
chosen. In an even-aged forest, foresters also have the opportunity to replant genetically improved seedlings which
are more disease resistant, grow faster, and possess better
timber and visual characteristics.
In addition only certain types of shade tolerant trees are able to grow underneath the taller trees in an uneven age

What is a watershed
An area of land that is bound by ridges or hills, and creates a basin in which water drains to a common point such as a river or lake.
What does RDI stand for
Relative Density Index - average density within a stand
What is a conifer
A tree that bears cones and needle-like leaves. Think, Christmas tree
What is forest fuel
Needles, shrubs, downed trees, and logs that line the forest ground. Forest fuel “fuels” fires, so fuel treatments are important to reducing forest fires
