Forest Flashcards
Country Distribution
Russia 20%
Brazil 12%
Canada 8.5%
USA 7.6%
China 5.4%
environmental impacts of deforestation
carbon storage
Modified climate (less CO2 absorbed by trees and increase of CO2 presence if trees are being burnt, plus extra Co2 in the atmosphere because of lack of trees)
Loss of biodiversity (species lose habitat therefore population loss) due to fragmentation (from roads - makes more vulnerable to droughts, fires, floods)
Loss of water cycling
Social impacts of deforestation
diseases spread amongst indigenous population through contact with timber cutters
Increase in viral disease and malaria - ecological changes, less trees, leaves a dirt plain, turns muddy and into a pond, causes stagnant water
Increase in westernisation - contribution to the disappearance of ancient practices, e.g.supermarkets not forests, loss in spiritual significance and medicine
Economic impacts of deforestation
Loss of subsistence agriculture
Increased commercial logging/ invasive and often aggressive
Timber being shipped out cheaply, money bypassing locals
LGM
forest was 10%
today
30%
Distribution
75% of all forest is in high to middle income countries
45% of forest cover exists in tropical countries
Drivers of deforestation
agriculture 73%
logging 19%
fuel wood collection 6%
human factors increasing deforestation
infrastructure projects
- roads that lead through forests lead to high levels of fragmentation of forest
Natural factors
pest invasions
climatic event
fires
HOWEVER forests usually recover from this but this has been increased by climatic change
