Chain of Custody
The process of documenting the movement of evidence through its collection, safeguarding, and analysis lifecycle.
Circumstantial Evidence
evidence that relies on an inference to connect it to a conclusion of fact.
Class Evidence
used to place an individual in a general class but cannot be used to identify an individual.
Reconstruction
the process of determining the sequence of events about what occurred during and after a crime.
Direct Evidence
evidence of a fact based on a witness’s personal knowledge of that fact acquired by means of the witness’s senses.
Evidence
information or objects that may be admitted into court for judges and juries to consider when hearing a case.
Identification
analysis of the characteristics of trace material found at a crime scene and the development of a probability estimate that the material was left at the scene by a particular person.
Individual Evidence
anything that can be linked to a unique, single, specific source.
Individualization
if an object can be classified into a group with only one member.
Investigation
the gathering and analysis of all crime-related physical evidence in order to come to a conclusion about a suspect.

clean paper folded for the containment of trace evidence.
Recognition
conducting speaker recognition methods to aid a judge or a jury in a judicial trial.
Trace Evidence
any type of evidence occurring in sizes so small that it can be transferred or exchanged between two surfaces without being noticed.
Transient Evidence
elements of physical evidence that might be expected to degrade or disappear within a particular time frame.
Prima Facie
upon initial examination, a legal claim has sufficient evidence to proceed to trial or judgment.
