Chain of Custody
a process that documents the sequence of events that occur with an asset, including who has handled it, when it was transferred, and why
Circumstantial Evidence
is indirect evidence that suggests a fact is true, but does not directly prove it.
Class Evidence
consists of substances such as blood and hair, which can be used to place an individual in a general class but cannot be used to identify an individual.
Reconstruction
the process of using scientific methods and evidence to determine how a crime occurred.
Direct Evidence
evidence that directly proves a fact without the need for inference. It can be physical or a witness’s testimony.
Evidence
information or objects that are used to investigate and prove crimes through scientific methods.
Identification
the process of analyzing evidence from a crime scene to identify a person, object, or location.
Individual Evidence
anything that can be linked to a unique, single, specific source.
Individualization
if an object can be classified into a group with only one member.
Investigation
the gathering and analysis of all crime-related physical evidence in order to come to a conclusion about a suspect.

Recognition
the process of comparing patterns or details from an unknown sample to a known source.
Trace Evidence
involves the analysis of small amounts of materials that can be transferred between people, objects, or the environment
Transient Evidence
physical evidence that can easily be lost or altered if not preserved properly within a specific time frame.
Prima Facie
“at first sight” or “at first look”
upon initial examination, a legal claim has sufficient evidence to proceed to trial or judgment.
