Forensics- Bottom Up Offender Profiling Flashcards
Aim of profiling
-Generate picture of offender (behaviour, background) through analysing crime scene.
Investigative Psychology
-British approach, data driven, links to statically procedures, details can be matched against data bases, see if series of crimes are linked/ committed by same person.
-How offender behaves at scene/ interacts with victim (e.g. time/place could tell where they work/live)
-Criminal forensic awareness
Geographical Profiling
-Assumed, serial offenders work in areas they are familiar with, help prevent crime, ‘centre of gravity’.
-Canter’s circle theory- 2 types, Marauders (live close), Commuters (travel to crime), infer age/ employment, transport.
AO3 (1)
-Supports investigative psychology
-Canter, computer program used to examine data, content analysis- identify correlations.
AO3 (2)
-Supports geographical profiling.
-Canter, 120 murder cases involving serial killers.
-Offender base normally with centre of gravity.
AO3 (3)
-Mixed results
-Nickell failed, ruled out the murder as too tall, brought someone else to trial on very little evidence.
-Kocsis, chemistry students provided more accurate profiles than senior detectives.
