Forelimb Muscles Flashcards
Superficial pectoral
Action: Adducts forelimb
Attachments:
Innervation: cranial pectoral
Deep pectoral
Action: Adducts limb, can flex/extend shoulder depending on position
Attachments:
Innervation: caudal pectoral
Brachiocephalicus
Action: Flexes neck laterally, extends shoulder
Attachments:
Innervation: accessory, ventral branches of cervical spinal nerves
Omotransversarius
Action: Extends shoulder, flexes neck laterally
Attachments:
Innervation: accessory
Trapezius
Action: Elevates and abducts forelimb
Attachments:
Innervation: accessory
Rhomboideus
Action: Elevates and adducts forelimb
Attachments:
Innervation: ventral branches of cervical and thoracic spinal nerves
Latissimus dorsi
Action: Flexes shoulder
Attachments:
Innervation: thoracodorsal
Serratus ventralis
Action: Supports trunk, depressed scapula
Attachments:
Innervation: long thoracic
Deltoideus
Action: Flexes shoulder
Attachments:
Innervation: axillary
Supraspinatus
Action: Extends and laterally stabilizes shoulder
Attachments:
Innervation: suprascapular
Infraspinatus
Action: Extends and laterally stabilizes shoulder OR flexes shoulder, depending on position; abducts and externally rotates shoulder, preventing internal rotation
Attachments:
Innervation: suprascapular
Teres major
Action: Flexes shoulder, internally rotates, prevents external rotation (opposes infraspinatus)
Attachments:
Innervation: axillary
Teres minor
Action: Flexes shoulder, externally rotates shoulder, prevents internal rotation (same as infraspinatus)
Attachments:
Innervation: axillary
Subscapularis
Action: Adducts forelimb, extends shoulder, medially stabilizes shoulder
Attachments:
Innervation: subscapular, axillary
Coracobrachialis
Action: Extends shoulder, adducts forelimb, stabilizes shoulder joint
Attachments:
Innervation: musculocutaneous
