-many on the far left were eurosceptic e.g. michael foot
-trade unions opposed EEC membership

-by march 1975 he renegotiated the terms of EEC membership
-he reduced the amount that britain paid into the EEC
-referendum held 5th of june 1975 - 68.3% vote to remain in EEC
