Describe the events in Germany in 1989.

A

• In 1989, eastern European countries began to open their borders. On January 1, 1989, the GDR relaxed its travel restrictions. By September, 161,000 East Germans had applied to emigrate. People demonstrated for the borders between the FRG and GDR to open, and they were on November 9, 1989. People flooded through the Berlin Wall checkpoints, beginning the era of a united Germany.
