Why did Louis start the War of League of Aubsburg? 1688

A
  1. Glory and influence from father. As well as his wonk obsession with war.
  2. Empty spaces in the positions he wanted
  3. Wanted to contain the Habsburg threat by declaring war on their land. As well as protect France from the many enemies that he had made in Europe at this time.
  4. The land he wanted would mean that he would achieve his linear frontiers. He also wanted to protect the boarders he had just received due to the reunions
  5. Louis was having a high point in foreign policy due to reunions so felt confident about winning this war.

Why did Louis become involved in the War of Spanish Succession? 1702

A
  1. Carlos 2nd died in 1700 leaving the throne free for taking. Louis wanted the throne for his great grandson. Carlos also did not produce an heir.

A

A agreement between France and Leopold that if Carlos died childless, then France and Austrian Habsburg would split up his land.

A

Between England, Dutch republic and Sweden. It was the triple alliance. Aim was to have peace between France and Spain. Was aggressive and forced Louis to accept treaties out of fear.

A

Louis allowed to retain some frontier towns after war of devolution. Had to withdraw from Spanish Netherlands and return French comet to Spain.

A

Between France and England, England gave support to France in the Dutch war in exchange for financial subsidies.

What was the Peace of Nijmegen? 1678-9

A

France, Dutch republic, Spain and Austria. Louis agreed to end tariff war and bring about good trade. Louis returned French comet and several other towns in the east and north. Restored parts of Alsace, but given bridgeheads across the Rhine.

What were the Reunions? 1670-84

A

They were land grabs that Louis made when he realised the loop holes in the treaties he had signed. Basically giving him more land without having to go to war over it. Many countries gave into Louis because they did not see him as a threat at this point.

A

Louis grandson was given the Spanish throne. H had to renounced the claim to the French throne. Louis recognises William and Mary as rightful monarchs of England. Austria given Spanish Netherlands. Spain withdraw from north-western Europe.

Why does Louis win the war of succession?

A
  1. Fighting goes on for ages, but after Louis offers peace he starts doing better.
  2. The changed in English government means that Te new Tory party wants to get out of the war.
  3. Holy roman emperor dies, archduke Charles takes over, Spain and England do not want this man to be king, therefore the likely hood of Louis grandson being kind seems a better idea.
