isolationism
a belief that America should not involve itself in the quarrels of Europe and Asia and should pursue a policy of military non-interventionism
foreign policy
efforts to pursue national objectives beyond the geographic boundaries of the nation by engaging either diplomatically or militarily with one or more foreign nations or multinational organizations
internationalism
a foreign policy perspective that concludes that America’s interests in peace abroad and liberty at home requires its permanent involvement in foreign affairs
Cold War
an era of intense ideological tension between the Soviet Union and its Allies and the United States and its Allies lasting from roughly the end of WWII to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

a policy proclaimed by President Harry Truman in 1947, in which the United States would oppose the expansion of Communism anywhere in the world.

a multi-billion dollar American program that began after WWII for the economic rehabilitation of Western Europe

Multinational organization formed int 1949 to provide for mutual defense against foreign attacks.

a french word meaning relaxation that was applied to soviet-American relations in the early 1970s
Nixon Doctrine
proclaimed by president Nixon in 1969, a policy stipulation that the US will support its allies with economic and military aid but that the allies should provide the bulk of the manpower for their own defense

est. by the national security act of 1974 and is responsible for the formulating maintaining the armed forces
Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)
heads of the various armed services and their chair that advise the president and the secretary of defense on important military questions.
