A

- May 1924 the Bolsheviks and the GMD signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations
- in 1926, the new leader of the GMD, Chiang Kai-shek, dismissed soviet advisors - Stalin didn’t want to admit that the alliance wasn’t working out
- This new leader of the GMD also purged the CCP which resulted in the Chinese civil war = 1927-1949
- During the civil war the Soviets gave limited support to the CCP as Stalin felt the GMD would win which meant that relations between the USSR and the new CCP leader of China, Mao Zedong, would never fully recover
