Forebrain Flashcards
what does the forebrain consist of?
thalamus, hypothalamus and cerebral cortex
what is the thalamus?
it is the point where all inputs to the cerebrum synapse before ascending to the cerebral cortex
what is the main function of the hypothalamus?
homeostasis - it directly controls, blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance and body weight
what is controlled by the hypothalamus via inputs to the medulla?
heart rate, vasconstriction, digestion and sweating - where the autonomic nervous system originates
how are other functions achieved?
by stimulation of the pituitary gland to release hormones
what is white matter?
it is axons
what is grey matter?
it is where the axons connects to the cell bodies
what does the grey matter Make up?
cerebral cortex
where does grey matter only exist?
on the surface of the hemispheres - in humans it is highly convoluted
what are the cerebral cortex higher functions?
intelligence, personality, interpretation of sensory impulses, motor function, planning and organisation and touch sensation
