Forearm, Wrist, Shoulder Flashcards
What phalange doe the thumb not have?
middle phalange
Colles’ Fracture:
- “FOOSH” injury: fall on outstretched hand
- fracture of the distal radius
- broken end of the radius (styloid process) points upward, ulna styloid prominence
- “dinner fork” appearance

What is this an image of?

Colles’ fracture
Scaphoid fracture:
- FOOSH with impact on thenar prominence
- scaphoid usually fractures at waist
- blood enters scaphoid distally, fracture can lead to osteonecrosis of proximal fragment

What is this an image of?

scaphoid fracture
Radioulnar joint:
- annular ligament
- pronation/supination

What bone is in red?

trapezium
- sits at base of thumb to form thumb carpometacarpal joint
Wrist flexors:
- Flexor carpi radialis
- Flexor carpi ulnaris
- Palmaris longus
ALL ATTACH TO MEDIAL EPICONDYLE
Digit flexors:
- Flexor digitorum superficialis (medial epicondyle)
- Flexor digitorum profundus (proximal ulna)
- Flexor pollicis longus (mid-distal radius)
The three deep flexors innervated by the anterior interosseous nerve:
- flexor digitorum profundus (½AI; ½ U)
- flexor pollicis longus
- pronator quadratus
Pronators and innervations:
- pronator teres (M)
- pronator quadratus (AI)
Wrist Extensors:
- Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus (R)
- Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (DR)
- Extensor Carpi Ulnaris (PI)
ALL ATTACH TO LATERAL EPICONDYLE
Superficial Digit Extensors:
- Extensor digitorum (PI)
- Extensor digiti minimi (PI)
Deep muscles of the posterior forearm innervated by posterior interosseous nerve:
- Abductor Pollicis Longus (PI)
- Extensor Pollicis Brevis (PI)
- Extensor Pollicis Longus (PI)
- Extensor Indicis (PI)
The only extensors not innervated by posterior interosseous nerve:
- Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus (R)
- Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (DR)
Interossei that are adductors:
PAD
- palmar interossei adduct digits 2, 3, and 5
Interossei that are abductors:
DAB
- dorsal interossei abduct digits 2, 3, and 4
Contents of the carpal tunnel:
- 9 Flexor Tendons
- Median Nerve
Result of Median Nerve Compression in the carpal tunnel:
- Paresthesia (“pins and needles”) in first 3.5 digits
- Motor Weakness
- Thenar Atrophy
Thenar Muscles are innervated by:
Median Nerve
Hypothenar Muscles are innervated by:
Deep Ulnar Nerve
Interossei are innervated by:
Deep Ulnar Nerve
Adductor Pollicis is innervated by:
Deep Ulnar Nerve
Lumbrical injury will lead to:
claw-like appearance of hand
