forces test Flashcards
inertia (kg)
tendency of an object to resist a change in motion unless an outside force acts on the object
more matter–> more inertia
mass (kg)
amount of matter in an object
matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
weight
a measure of gravitational force on an object
changes where you are in the universe
acceleration
rate of at which velocity changes over time
Newton’s 1st Law
an object in motion/rest will stay in motion/rest when fnet=0 (unless another force acts upon it)
Newton’s 2nd Law
a net force causes acceleration
fnet=ma
net force
amount of forces added
forces going are positive
gravity
the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
free fall
the motion of a body when only the force of gravity is acting on the body
free fall acceleration
acceleration in free fall
air resistance
air resisting things that fall
ex. parachuting
terminal velocity
the constant velocity of a falling object when the force of air resistance is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force of gravity (weight and air resistance the same)
projectile
the curved path that an object follows when thrown, motion of object is in two dimensions (vertical and horizontal) under the force of gravity
parabola
two dimensional, symmetrical curve
