Forces Test Flashcards
What is weight?
the downward force every mass feels due to gravity.
What is mass?
How much matter something is made of.
What is a contact force
Any force that can only be exerted if object are touching.
Non- Contact
Any force that can be exerted without object touching.
What is the centre of mass?
The point from which the weight of an object appears to act from.
What is a pivot
The point about which a lever can rotate when a moment is present
What is hooke’s law
For a spring force is directly proportional to extension.
What is the effort
The force being applied to a lever to counter a load.
What is the load
The force(often the weight) from an object being moved by a lever
What is a moment
The turning effect of a force(m=f x d)
What is it when something is directly proportional.
When one variable increases, the rate of increases of the other remains consistent.
What is an elastic limit
The point beyond a material no longer obeys hooke’s law
What is a springs constant
It is the stiffness of spring. It force need for each unit of extension.
What is plastic deformation
Permanent deformation is when the unloaded material doesn’t return to its original shape.
What is extension
=original length- new(stretched length)
