Forces Review Flashcards
Newton’s second law
Force is proportional to mass and acceleration.
Ex
The greater the mass the smaller the object will move within a given force
Newtons 1st law
An object at rest will stay at rest unless an outside unbalanced force acts upon it; An object in motion will stay at in motion unless an outside unbalanced force acts upon it
Newtons 3rd law
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
Why do people lunge forward when the car they are in suddenly slows down?
When the car is slowing down, you tend to keep moving at the velocity you originally were at before the car began slowing down.
What happens to passengers when a car makes a sharp right turn? Why?
They fall to the left because they were originally going in that direction and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by and outside unbalanced force.
What happens to a pace ship when it reaches outer space and shuts off its engine? Why?
It continues to travel in that direction. Because an object in motion stays in motion until an outside unbalanced force acts upon it.
If an elephant were chasing you, how could you avoid being squished?
Because of its large mass, the elephant would have difficultly zigzagging – in changing its motion
