Forces & Motion Flashcards
What is stopping distance?
The distance covered in the time between the driver first spotting a hazard and the car actually stopping.
What is thinking distance?
The distance the car travels in the time between the driver noticing the hazard and applying the breaks.
How does how fast you’re traveling affect the thinking distance?
The faster you’re going, the further you will go until you stop.
What else effects the thinking distance?
How dopey you are- tiredness, drugs, alcohol, old age, carelessness
What is the braking distance?
The distance the car travels during its deceleration whilst the breaks are being applied.
How dos how fast you’re going affect the braking distance?
The faster you’re going, the further it takes to stop.
How does how heavy your vehicle is affect the braking distance?
A heavily laden vehicle takes longer to stop.
What three things does the grip of a car depend on?
Road surface, weather & tyres
What else effects the breaking distance?
How good your breaks are
What does visibility mean for the stopping distance?
Bad visibility means that the drivers do no notice a hazard until they are quite close to it, meaning they have a much shorter distance available to stop in.
Tyres should have a minimum tread depth of ____
1.6 mm
What does stopping distance =
Thinking distance + braking distance
What is acceleration?
How quickly the velocity is changing.
What do flat sections on a VT graph represent?
Steady speed
To keep going at a steady speed, what type of force must there be?
Zero resultant force
