Forces & Motion Flashcards
What was Newton’s First Law?
A body at rest remains at rest; a body at motions continues to move at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force
What are the main forces acting upon an object?
Air resistance and drag
What was Newton’s Second Law?
Force is proportional to the mass and the acceleration
What is the formula for Force?
Force= Mass x Acceleration
What was Newton’s Third Law?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is Weight?
A force measured in Newtons
What is Mass?
The number of atoms in an object measured in kilograms
What is the formula for Weight?
Weight = Mass x Gravity
What is the the gravity on Earth?
9.81 metres per second
What is the formula for Moments?
Moment = Force x perpendicular distance from pivot
What is Terminal Velocity?
When a freely falling object cannot accelerate any further because of the resistance of the fluid that it is falling through
What is the Resultant Force?
The over all force acting upon an object
What is the formula for Pressure?
Pressure = Force/Area
What is Conduction?
When heat is transferred between two touching objects
What is Convection?
When fluids (either liquids or gases) move from hot areas to cold ones
What is Radiation?
When heat is transferred through infra-red waves
