Forces In Earth's Crust Flashcards
What is tension?
The stress force is called tension, it pulls on the crust, stretching the rock so it becomes thinner in the middle.
What is stress?
Stress is when a force that acts on a rock to change it’s volume or shape.
What is compression?
Compression squeezes rocks and folds or breaks the crust.
What is shearing?
Stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions is called shearing.
What is a normal faults?
The fault is at an angle, so one block or rock that lies above the fault while the other block lies below the fault.
What is a Reverse fault?
A reverse fault has the same structure as a normal fault, but the blocks move in the opposite direction.
What is a strike-slip fault?
In a strike-slip fault, the rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other, sideways, with a little up and down motion.
