Forces In Earth Crust Flashcards
Tension
Tension is stress that pulls and streches rocks . Tension makes rockes thinner in the middle .
Compresion
Compression is stress that squesses rocks . Compresson makes makes rocks fold or break .
Shearing
Shearing is stress that pusshes rocks in oppsite directions . Shearing makes rocks break, slip apart,or change shape.
Normal fault
Normal fault happens when tension pulls rocks apart. In a normal fault the hanging wall slips down and becomes lower than the foot-wall.
Hanging wall
The fault line is slanted ,so the block of rock on one side lf the fault is ablve the block of rock on the other side of the wall. The rock above is called the hanging wall.
Foot wall
The fault line is slanted ,so the block of rock on one side lf the fault is ablve the block of rock on the other side of the wall. The rock above is called the hanging wall. The bottom rock is called the foot-wall.
Reverse fault
Reverse fault happens when commperson pushes rocks together.
Strike-slip fault
Strike-slip happens when shearing pushes rocks in opostite directions.
Anticline
A fold of the rock that slopes down on both sides.
Synline
A fold in rocks layers that slopes up of a common low point.
Plateu
A platue is a flat land or a high plane.
Stress
When earth plates move , rocks are pushed and pulled. This push and pull is called stress
