Forces In Balance Flashcards
What is distance
Distance is amount that something traveled all together, for example something could travel in a circle and it would still have traveled however many metres.
What is displacement
Displacement is the distance in 1 direction no taking into account any detours.
What is a vector examples
Physical quantities that have direction and size/magnitude, e.g force, weight, momentum and velocity
What is a scalar and examples
Physical quantities that have size/magnitude but no direction, e.g speed, distance, time, mass energy and power
What dose newtons third law of motion state
When 2 objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces on each other
What is the unit of force
Newtons (N)
What is a resultant force
The resultant force is a single force that has the same effect as two or more forces acting together. It is the magnitude of all the forces added or subtracted with a direction.
What is a contact force
Contact forces are forces that act between two objects that are physically touching each other. e.g friction, air resistance and tension
What is an equilibrium
When the sum of the clockwise forces equals the sum of the anti clock wise forces
What dose it mean if object are balanced
If the forces acting on an object are balanced, then the resultant force is zero
What dose it mean if a force is unbalanced
If a force is unbalanced it means the resultant force is not zero. The moment of the object is decided by size and direction.
What is a force multiplieryer
A force multiplier is where the moment is greater than the effort due to a lever that acts on a pivot
How do you work out the moment of a force
Moment (Nm) = perpendicular distance (M) x force (N)
How are gears force multipliers
Gears are force multipliers as they multiply the effect of a turning force
How do you calculate the moment of a gear
Moment (Nm) = Force (N) x gear radius (m)
