Forces In Balance Flashcards
To learn all about the forces in action (27 cards)
what is displacement?
displacement is when you travel a specific distance without changing your direction. In other words, displacement is distance in a certain direction.
what are vectors?
vectors are physical quantities that have a direction.
acceleration, force, momentum, weight and gravitational field strength are all examples of?
they are all examples of vectors.
what do you call a physical quantity that has a size but no specific direction?
scalers
speed, distance, time, mass, energy and power are all examples of what?
they are all examples of scalars
what is magnitude?
magnitude is the size of a quantity.
what has magnitude ( size) as well as a direction?
vectors. unlike scalars, which only have magnitude, vectors have both.
when do you need to use a scale diagram?
when more than one force acts on an object, the forces on the object sometimes need to be shown In a scale diagram.
here’s a good study tip for you.
force diagrams usually show more than one force. for this reason, the forces in the diagram should always be clearly labelled to identify the force. force diagrams do not always need to be scale diagrams, but if a diagram is a scale diagram, the scale should be shown (e.g. 10mm = 1.0 N)
what can be represented by an arrow?
a vector quantity can be represented by an arrow in the direction of the vector and if length in proportion to the magnitude of the vector.
what can forces do to things?
forces can change the shape of an object or change its state of rest of its motion.
what is a force?
a force is a push or a pull that acts on an object because of its interaction with another object.
what are contact forces?
contact forces are when 2 objects must touch each other to interact.
can you name 4 example a of a contact force?
examples include friction, air, resistance, stretching forces (or tension) and normal contact forces.
when do contact forces occur?
contact forces occur when an object is supported by or strikes another object.
magnetic force, electrostatic force and the force of gravity are all examples of what?
Non-contact forces.
what is Newtons third law?
Newtaons third law states that when two objects interact whith each other, they exert equal and opposite forces in each other.
what is the unit of force?
Newtons (N)
what would be a good example of newtons third law ( when 2 objects interact with each other, they exert equal and plopposite forces in each other?)
A boxer who punches a bag with a force of 100N experiences an equal and opposite force of 100N from the bag.
what is engine force?
the driving force on a car is the force that makes it move. this is sometimes called the engine or the motive force.
what is motive force?
motive force is the same as engine force ( the driving force on a car is the force that makes it move)
how is engine force/ motive force caused?
this force is caused by the friction between the ground and the tyre of each drive wheel, friction acts where the tyre comes into contact with the ground.
what happens when the car moves forward?
the force of the friction of the road on the tyre is in the forward direction.
the force of the direction of the tyre in the road is in the reverse direction.
how do you work out the effect of a force on an object?
you can work out the effect of the force on an object by replacing them with a single force, the resultant force.
