forces in balance Flashcards
What is distance ?
-How far an object moves
-does not involve direction
What is displacement?
-includes both the distance of an object moves
-measured in a straight line from the start to the finish point of the direction of the straight line
what is a vector?
The physical quantity that have size/ magnitude and direction
what are scalars?
The physical quantity that have size/ magnitude but have no direction
what is a magnitude?
The size of the quantity
How to clarify a distance and displacement as scalar and vector?
-Distance is a scalar quantity
-Displacement is a vector quantity
What is the equation for force?
Force= mass x acceleration
What are examples of scalar quantities?
-length
-area
-volume
-speed
-mass
-density
-pressure
-temp
-energy
What are examples of vector quantities?
-displacement
-velocity
-acceleration
-momentum
-force
-lift
-drag
-thrust
-weight
What are contact forces?
When two objects must touch to interact
What are non-contact force?
-When two objects exert a force on each other when they are not touching
What is a force?
-A force is an influence that can cause an object to change its velocity unless counterbalanced by other forces
e.g when you kick a football your foot is applying force to the ball
What is force measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is Newton’s third law ?
When two objects interact with one another, they exert equal and opposite forces on one another
What effect can forces have on objects ?
-change its shape (deform it)
-change its motion
-change its state of rest
What is resultant force ?
a single force that has the same effect as all of the forces acting on an object together
What happens to an object if the resultant force is:
(a) zero
(b) more than zero
zero
- object stays at the same speed and direction or stays at rest
more
- object changes direction and/or speed
What is Newton’s first law of motion ?
if the forces acting on an object are balanced:
- (if moving) continues in the same direction and speed
- (if at rest) stays at rest
What is the centre of mass of an object ?
the point at which the object’s mass can be thought of as concentrated
What is force measured in?
Newtons (N)
difference between speed and velocity
