Forces In Actions Flashcards
What is tension
Tension is a stretching force
What is compression
Compression is caused by a squashing force
What is elastic deformation
Elastic deformation is the ability for materials are able to return to their original shapes once force is removed
What is plastic deformation
Plastic deformation is when objects retain their new shapes, even once force is removed
What is Hookes law
Hookes Law states that the extension of a spring force is directly proportional to the force used to stretch the spring, provided that the limit of proportionality is not exceeded
How to find force using spring constant and extension
F = k * x
(N) = (N/m) * (m)
Force = spring constant * extension
What is the elastic limit
It is the maximum amount that an object can be stretched or squashed, that even when the force is removed, the object should still be able to go back to its original shape (elastic deformation)
How do you plot the elastic limit on a graph
It is the point before the graph starts to curve
What is the meaning of elastic potential energy
The amount of energy transferred to an object that has been stretched or squashed
What is the formula for elastic potential energy
EPE = 1/2 * K * x^2
—> elastic potential energy = half of spring constant * extension squared
What are the units of EPE
EPE = J
K = N/m
x = m
