Forces In Action Flashcards
Equation for force and it’s units
Force=mass x Velocity
Newtons (N)
Kgms^-2
A force of 1 newton will give a mass of 1kg mass an acceleration of 1ms^-2 in the direction of the force
Describe mass and weight
Mass- kg
Weight- N = mass x gravity
What is centre of mass?
It is the point in which the weight is in effect on a object. Where the weight is equal on all points of the centre of gravity
Describe how to find the centre of gravity of an irregular object
Suspend an object and then use a plumb line and draw along it repeat this and the point where they all cross is the centre of mass
Name the six key types of forces
Weight Friction Drag Tension Upthrust Normal Contact Force
Define weight
The gravitational force acting on an object through its centre of mass
Define Friction
The force that arises when two surfaces rub against each other
Define drag force
The resistive force an object traveling through a fluid (liquid or gas) the same as friction
Define tension
The force within a stretched object (e.g. Rope or cable)
Define Upthrust
An upward buoyancy force acting on an object when it is in a fluid
Define Normal Contact force
A force arising when one object rests against another object
