FORCES AT WORK Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull that objects exert on each other.
How can you determine a force a push?
A Push Force can be determined as a push if the object moves in the opposite direction of the force.
How can you determine a force as a pull?
A pull force can be determined as a pull if the object moves towards the force.
What are the five changes that take place when particular forces are acting?
- Change the shape of an object
- Change the direction of an object
- Cause something to start moving
- Cause something to stop moving
- Speed or Slow down a object
Contact Forces (Forces that…)
Forces that act between two objects that are in contact with one another
Non Contact Forces (Forces that…)
Forces that can occur even between two objects that are not touching each other.
Newton
An English physicist famous for his discussions about how forces effect motion.
Spring balance
A device used to measure forces
Balanced forces
A force that acts on a object in opposite directions
Unbalanced Forces (A force that doesn’t have…)
A force that doesn’t have equal and opposite force acting on the same object
What are the three possible results of a force acting on an object?
Sliding, attempting to slide or over one another
What Forces are non contact?
Gravity, Friction, Electrostatic force and Magnetism force.
How is the Size of a Force represented in a digram?
A force is represented in a digram using a force arrow or vector.
What are examples Contact Forces?
Pushing, Pulling, Friction
Friction
Friction is a force that slows down or prevents movement.
Increasing Mass (More/Less)
Increasing surface area (More/Less) Friction
Increasing Mass More
Increasing surface area More Friction
Why is friction important when walking?
Friction is important when walking because if we didn’t have it we wouldn’t manage to get a grip and stay upright.
What is the name of the friction that acts on a object moving through the air?
Air resistance
What is Gravity?
Gravity is the force that acts between two objects because they have mass. The force of Gravity on the earth is what pulls objects to the centre of the earth.
Why does the Moon have less gravity then earth?
The Moon has less gravity than the earth because it is smaller
Does distance increase the gravitational field?
no
Applied Force
A force exerted by a person, animal or machine
Elastic Force
A force that occurs when a springy object is squashed or stretched
gravitational Field
The space around an object where its gravity is felt
Net Force
The overall force of a object
Do two positively charged objects repel?
Yes
Which to atoms in a particle carry electric charge?
- electrons
- protons
Do two negative charged objects repel?
yes
A positively charged object is expected to attract a negative charge (True/False)
TRUE
What is the unit used to measure forces? (Hint who created gravity?)
Newton
What is an example of an unbalanced force acting in an everyday solution?
Kicking a football and it moves from one place to another
