Forces and Speed Flashcards
Newton Meter
A piece of equipment used to measure weight in newtons
Newton
The unit of force, symbol: N
Push/Pull force
A force exerted to move an object away or towards another object
Friction
The force between two surfaces sliding over one another, that causes them to heat up and wear. Friction opposes motion
Weight (gravity)
The force that pulls objects towards the centre of the Earth
Air resistance (drag)
A force acting against any object that is moving through the Earth’s atmosphere
Lift
A force pushing upwards on an object flying in the air
Upthrust
A force pushing upwards on an object in a liquid
Thrust
A push caused by an engine
Reaction
The support force provided by a solid surface like a floor
Speed = distance ÷ time
Distance = speed x time; Time = distance ÷ speed
Archimedes
A Greek scientist
Plimsoll Line
A reference mark on ships hulls relevant to weight
Independent variable
What we change
Dependant variable
What we measure
