forces and speed Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push or a pull.
What force slows me down?
Air resistance.
How can I reduce friction?
By lubricating the item and making it more streamlined.
What keeps things afloat?
Upthrust
What is weight?
Weight is a force. It measures the effect gravity is having on an object. Weight is measured in newtons.
What is mass?
Mass is the measurement of how much of something there is.
What is the equation for finding weight?
weight = mass times gravitational field strenght (newtons per kilogram)
How do you find density?
You do mass divided by volume.
How dense is water?
1g/cm3
What is the magnetic force?
The force between two magnets, or a magnet and a magnetic material.
What is the equation for finding speed?
speed = distance divided by time
What is the equation for finding distance?
distance = speed multiplied by time
What does balance mean?
Forces acting on the object are the same size but act in opposite directions.
What does deform mean?
Deform means to change shape.
What does unbalanced mean?
Forces that are not balanced.
What is air resistance?
Air resistance is the force of an object moving through the air that causes it to slow down.
What are the characteristics of a streamlined shape?
1) rounded front
2) slowly tapering
3) smooth shape
Is there more air resistance acting on a smooth shape or a bumpy shape?
There is more air resistance acting on the bumpy shape.
What is a newton meter?
A piece of equipment used to measure weight in newtons.
What is tension?
A stretching force.
compress
To squash into a smaller space.
Is gravity a non-contact force?
Yes.
Weight drags you down. True or false?
True.
Balloons float because the upthrust is greater than the weight. True or false?
True.
If forces are balanced on a moving car are balanced, does it continue to move at the same speed or not?
The car continues to move at a constant speed.
Does friction always oppose motion?
Yes, it always does.
