forces and speed Flashcards
(28 cards)
air resistance
the force on an object moving through the air that causes it to slow down
contact force
a force that acts when an object is in contact with a surface, air or water
driving force
the force that is pulling or pushing something
electrostatic force
the force acting between two charged forces
magnetic force
the force between two magnets, or a magnet and a magnet material
non-contact force
a magnetic, electrostatic or gravitational force that acts between objects not in contact
water resistance
the force of an object moving through water that causes it to slow down
newton (N)
the unit of force, symbol N
weight
the force of the Earth on an object due to its mass
newton meter
a piece of equipment used to measure weight in newtons
Hooke’s law
a law (invented by Robert Hooke) that says if you double the force on an object the extension will double
kilogram (kg)
the unit of mass, symbol kg
deform
to change shape (e.g a spring)
friction
the force that resists movement because of contact between surfaces (e.g when a car brakes)
reaction force
the support force provided by a solid surface (like a floor)
streamlined
shaped to reduce resistance to motion from air or water
compress
to squash into a smaller space
balanced forces
forces acting on an object that are the same size but act in different directions
extension
the amount by which an object gets longer when a force is applied. work it out by NEW LENGTH - ORIGINAL LENGTH
density
work it out by MASS/VOLUME
gradient
the slope of a graph. the steeper the gradient, the faster it goes. the gradient of a line in a distance-time graph equals the speed
average speed
work it out by TOTAL DISTANCE/ TOTAL TIME
vector quantity
they have a size and direction
equilibrium
balanced
